Two day workshop on Sensorimotor-Focused EMDR Croke Park Celtic Suite

Dates Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October 2019 from 9.30am to 5.30pm

Learning objectives

This therapeutic approach involves integration of two well established therapeutic approaches. The first is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. This is a bottom up approach to psychotherapy. Pat Ogden, Kekuni Minton and Clare Pain wrote Trauma and the body in 2006 which was followed by a book on trauma and dissociation by Pat Ogden and Janina Fisher. Secondly EMDR is a top-down, approach to psychotherapy involving bilateral stimulation as a key component which is used mainly for traumatic stress and other mental health problems. Combining these approaches enables intensive treatment for disorders such as ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Mood and eating disorders, phobias and deliberate self-harm. I have integrated these approaches; culminating in my second book, “Sensorimotor Focused EMDR:A New Paradigm for Psychotherapy and Peak Performance,” which was published by Routledge in December 2018 and has a foreword by Dr Derek Farrell. Combining these techniques allows for treatment of complex trauma and associated dissociative symptoms. Patients are shown how to develop mental toughness and resilience leading to more optimal functioning. There is increasing evidence applying this approach in diverse fields such as business, sport, music and in any career where striving for peak performance is often accompanied by repeated failures. I have used SF-EMDR in the management of the emotional aspects of physical health problems such as complex pain and in the treatment of neglect and emotional, physical and sexual abuse. The workshop will address these issues with clinical examples and there will be time for delegates to discuss how this approach might apply to their own patients and clients.

Dr O’Malley has practiced as a doctor since 1990 and as a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist from 2004 until 2015 for the NHS. As an EMDR Europe Consultant accredited since 2008 he sees patients with PTSD and complex trauma across the lifespan. He has presented widely in the fields of trauma, neglect and the developing brain, attachment disorders, personality disorders, emotional dysregulation in ADHD and ASD diagnosis and management. He supervises therapists towards accreditation as both Practitioners and Consultants in EMDR. In Jan 2011 he was nominated and elected a fellow of the royal college of psychiatrists (FRCPsych). He first presented a version of this approach at the annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and dissociation in November 2011 in Canada and at the Bowlby Centre in London. In November 2013 a workshop on the Art of BART was held to raise funds for the Humanitarian Assistance Programme or HAP and about 90 EMDR therapists attended. Karnac Books published his book, the Art of BART: Bilateral Affective Reprocessing of Thoughts as a dynamic model for Psychotherapy in March 2015. It is still available from Amazon or www.routledge.com. The follow up book Sensorimotor-Focused EMDR: A New Paradigm for Psychotherapy and Peak Performance is an integration of Sensorimotor Focused EMDR, Brief Effective Psychotherapy and the Quantum Field Theory of the therapist patient interaction. He has been a member of the UK and Ireland EMDR association child and adolescent committee from 2016 to 2020 and is an EMDR Europe Consultant for Children, Adolescents and Adults.
